§ 16-20. Chief; appointment; qualifications; grounds for removal.

  • (a)

    The fire chief shall be appointed by the mayor, subject to approval by the board, for an indefinite period of time, and his tenure of office shall depend upon his good conduct and efficiency. The chief shall be technically qualified by training and experience and shall have the ability to command men and hold respect and confidence. He shall be removed only for just cause upon recommendation by the mayor, and approval by the board.

    (b)

    In the event of a tie vote on the board regarding a recommendation on the appointment or removal of a fire chief, the recommendation of the mayor shall prevail.
